CHILL Ways to beat stress
In more ways today than ever before, teens are feeling tension and stress. School, sports teams, social cliques, long term goals—they fall heavy on the shoulders of young people. How can you take a break from the strain? Since stress has come up with creative ways of finding you, you are going to have to find creative ways to put it back in perspective! Here are some ideas to get you started. Make your dog help you Pay special attention to your favorite pet. Take your gerbil on a walk (you might want to be holding her.) Throw a Frisbee around for your rooster—anything to show him you care, right?
Write two songs One can express anger or confusion and the other must express gratitude or love or happiness. Then combine them into a new song.
Stand on your hands Or just sit in a yoga pose for 10 minutes
Write a speech and move your mirror If you were accepting a Grammy, Oscar, or Miss America Tiara, what would you say? Deliver this moving discourse to your mirror—mean it.
Go to the library Especially if you don’t read a lot (especially, especially if you don’t even like reading!) Go to a part of the library you wouldn’t normally find yourself in—pick up a how to book on writing a resume.
Teach yourself something useful Since you’re already on the internet, open a new tab and look around for how to publish a book, sell an invention, produce a CD—whatever your overspent heart desires!
Pick up your camera and fill up the card Who cares if you’re “not an artist”? Figure out what pictures you like to look at. Take 5 or take 483, then bring them back to your computer and make your favorite the screen saver.
Sing Sing at the top of your voice! If you don’t know how, go to a site like www.YouTube.com and search for voice lessons or vocal warm-ups.
This might be a stretch for some of you… But that’s just fine. Volunteer. One, it’s good on any type of application. Two, you’ll like it more than you expect. Really, go with a good attitude. Three? You’re nice—let other people feel that.
